It took me awhile to decide on my word for the year. I had so many different words swirling around in my head for different areas in my life. It wasn’t until I was listening to my husband preach an amazing sermon this past Sunday that the word just hit me.

My word for the year is Focus.

When I think back to 2016, nothing spectacular happened. We didn’t see our big family goal happen, nothing big stands out to me that happened in 2016. Not that every year needs to be big, but I was very ready to see the year end, and for a fresh start.

We sat around the table as a family the other night and used the Best Year Ever Goal Planner that Sean made, and I used the page to rate how I felt 2016 went. I didn’t feel like I had very many successes in 2016 at all, and it was so eye opening to write down my reasons why. I encourage you to sit down and take a good look at the past year as well, because it helps as you go forward into the new year!

This year I want to focus on all the important things. In a way, get back to the basics. Renew my vision for the importance of being a mother and a homemaker. Read to my children again (we did really good with this in the first half of the year, not so much the second half).

I want to focus more on cleaning my house daily instead of letting things pile up. I’m using the Motivated Moms app on my phone this year, and I have hope of this being a huge help. I just need someone else telling me what to do each day with my house. When I look around my house I see all the obvious tasks (dishes need done, laundry needs washed, bathrooms need cleaned), but the little things don’t get done. I like that I can just scroll through the list and assign my children each a small job and we all pitch in together to get the list accomplished for the day.

I want to focus on our businesses more. I want to do a better job of planning out blog posts, and having a better schedule as to when I work. I have a brand new business coming probably the end of this month (more details coming soon!) and I will need a great deal of focus to make it all work.

My spiritual life needs more focus. I need to spend more time in prayer and reading God’s word. Instead of carrying all my burdens around myself, bringing them to God and laying them at His feet! I’m a better wife, mother, friend, and business owner when I make spending time with God first.

I need to focus on giving myself grace. I feel so guilty when I have downtime (which I had a lot more of last year than normal). The truth is, I can only go so long without totally burning out. I went to bed at 8:00 last night, because I was just so exhausted! My husband is quick to give me grace and tell me to take a nap, or go have quiet time, so I need to not feel guilty about this!

I need to focus on fitness. I’m working on eating healthy and actually doing workouts. I started using a DVD from Leslie Sansone that incorporates weights and walking, I really like the challenge! Normally her walking DVD’s alone don’t feel challenging enough, but I woke up sore from doing the leg workout with 5 pound dumbbells. 🙂

I’m excited about using this word for 2017. I’m hopeful for the year ahead, and looking forward to seeing that God has in store for our family!

6 Comments on My Word Of The Year For 2017!

  1. Thank you for sharing these things! It’s such a valuable exercise to look over the past year, over the good and the not-so-good, and marvel at the grace of God and how He blesses us whether or not we “perform”.

I have a word for the year, too! It’s a new idea for me, so I’m trying to figure out what all to do with it–but I was excited to see yours. 🙂

    Blessings on your year!

  2. I’m not doing the One Word thing ‘officially’ but have been running across so many posts about it, that I’ve unofficially gone with ‘STRETCH’ – which is about both physical conditioning and moving outside my comfort zone.

  3. This was a great post! I feel like last year was a good year for me spiritually. The other day I saw the phrase “Love Well,” and I think that is going to be one of my phrases or goals this year. I also want to focus on demonstrating Christ to my children, being less frustrated with them, and teaching them more how to act, and training them better. I need to do better at reading to them too. We recently got some good books, so that should be fun! That is all a start. I need to put my thoughts down on paper. We just got back from Christmas break at family’s house, so doing lots of putting away stuff and cleaning today, and probably the rest of the week. I’m excited about the New Year! I hope your’s goes amazing. I’ve really enjoyed your blog this year, and I think you are doing a great job of it and writing from your heart!

  4. This is the same word I chose for this year also, and for many of the same reasons. I want to focus on the things important to me: God, family, being a housewife. I want to be in the moment!
