To My Newborn Baby, With Love From Mama

To My Newborn Baby, With Love From Mama!

Dearest Baby Girl,

It took nine months for you to grow and become strong enough to come into this world.

If I’m being honest, those nine months were not pleasant ones.

I loved feeling you kick and move about, but many days were spent either at the toilet vomiting, lying on my couch or bed, so fatigued I felt I couldn’t even move, and being poked for blood work and progesterone shots multiple times.

All the while, your five older brothers and sisters were running around needing the attention and care of mama.

I was torn as to who to give attention to, but ultimately knew they would survive this time. Your life was feeble and depended on mama giving you as much care as I possibly could. That meant rest, taking the progesterone, and attempting to eat even when I knew I wasn’t going to be able to keep it down.

When you were born I was so exhausted I couldn’t even hold you. I didn’t cry with emotion – no laughs of joy were heard. Instead, I was physically spent and in an incredible amount of pain – more pain than I’ve ever been in before.

Giving birth can be a joyful thing, but also a very painful thing!

It was like I bottled up the nine months of work it took to get you here and put it into labor.

A week later, I gaze at your face and wonder what we would do without you. The pain of labor is still there, the need for lots of rest still persists, but slowly the agony of the nine months is fading away as I fall in love with you.

Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. Psalm 30:5

You were born in the wee hours of the morning. It was pitch dark, and I was beginning to despair of you ever being born at home. And then suddenly, the Lord granted the prayers of my heart and you came.

It reminds me of trials in life. We despair of ever being rid of them, and then the Lord gives us sweet relief. Even if those trials do not end, there are moments of rest, and sometimes of complete deliverance. It is far from easy, but he gives us the strength to endure.

What can take the place of your baby hiccups, your little grunts, your sweet yawns, and the frantic need you have for food and love that only mama can give right now. You were fashioned in a furnace of affliction, but you have come forward as a vessel of unspeakable worth.

I thank my God that you are here and that I was chosen to be your mother and whatever the future holds for you and I, be it joy or sorrow, I will always, ALWAYS love you.

  4. This made me cry.
We just had our fifth baby on the 19th and your sentiments so echoed my own. This was also the hardest pregnancy I’ve ever gone through. And by the time we had our little one I was so tired, I despaired in labor for the first time. You are right though – God provides relief at our weakest moments. And our little one is such a blessing. I continue to fall in love more and more everyday with Her at every smile, noise, and facial expression. I know that there will be more trials ahead, but for now I rejoice in the blessing and relief.

  5. Thank you Caroline for writing this. The last two paragraphs about furnace of affliction and unspeakable worth then how we will always, always Love our child no matter what comes encouraged me this morning. It did renew my strength. Thank you sister in Christ.

  8. Your post moved me to tears. Motherhood is such a journey, not always pleasant, but always worth the pain and difficulties. I hope your recovery goes smoothly. The picture of you and your husband is priceless.

  9. I am glad you and the baby made it through safely. After two miscarriages at three months, we are having my progesterone levels checked, but have not gotten the results yet. I have been told of the cream, but not shots. The shots sounds awful!

    1. The shots are very rough, but I had to keep the goal in mind every time I got them…a new baby to love and snuggle. I would go back and do it all over again if I had to! BUT…it does not take away from the fact that a pregnancy on progesterone shots is really hard!

  10. Sweet relief…strength to endure. Motherhood & life are both hard and beautiful, aren’t they?

It sounds like the road to holding your baby was rough. Blessings to you as you enjoy your little one.
