My Big Weekend Break…

We had been looking forward to Labor Day weekend, as we were getting away for the entire weekend to spend at a church retreat with friends. It was a time to get away from the world and everyday cares and concerns, and just enjoy good fellowship and encouraging sermons.

We arrived Friday night and set up camp in a little cabin. I unpacked everything, hung some encouraging posters on the wall, and we had brought our CD player with some nice music to play in our cabin. I wanted to make it as homey as possible. Sean and I were in charge of campfire that evening, and I had a question about it, so I strapped Deborah in the Ergo and set off towards the main building to find out the answer.

As I was walking down a slight hill, my foot went into a hole, and I went flying and landed on the grass. Deborah was just fine, she looked at me and I could tell she was ready for me to get back up again and start walking! My foot, on the other hand, was not ready for me to get up. :/ Instantly the question “is it broke?” was going through my head, as my heart refused to believe that we could possibly have another broken foot in the same year in our family.

After a few minutes I got up and started limping back to the cabin, and called for my sister and brother in law to get Deborah as soon as I saw them. I went into the cabin and asked my husband to pray for me. After that, he scooped me up in his arms and carried me to the van. After some more prayers and putting ice on it, we decided to go to urgent care, since they were open late on Friday nights.

After an X-Ray, the Dr. came in and confirmed that yes, I had indeed broken my foot, in the same bone that my husband did earlier this year, it just is not as bad of a break as what he did. I couldn’t believe it, and still can’t!

I ended up staying at my mother-in-law’s house quite a bit, as she lives five minutes away from the campground. I went for some of the services, and just put my broken foot up on a chair to try and keep the swelling down. The reality of the situation really hit me on Saturday evening, when my husband was preaching. A friend sat with me to help, and my sister and mother–in-law were behind me. My three and one year old daughters both started melting down and screaming at the same moment in the service, to the point where you couldn’t even hear my husband speak! A friend took Deborah, and my mother-in-law took our three year old, while I sat there and cried because I couldn’t take care of my babies.

We won’t know how long I will be a cast and crutches until I see a Dr. in a week. We are praying it is for six weeks, and not 5 months like my husband! My hope is to find the beauty in the situation, and to redeem these moments of laying on the couch, and use them for good. I plan on doing a lot more reading with my children, and we will be spending lots more time together since I will be on the couch a lot! I’m trying not to look at the negative side of things, the appointments I have to cancel, the 5K I can’t run, not being able to manage my home for awhile, and the difficulties of church time, and focus on how much worse this could all be.

Friends, both locally and online have been incredible in offering to help us. Fellow Lilla Rose consultants that I have never even met are sending food gift cards to us, and local friends are offering to bring meals. A sweet friend is coming tomorrow to help do laundry and help out while Sean is gone and I’m adjusting to all of this. I’m so humbled by the love being shown to our family!

I have yet to figure out Modest Mondays exactly, but I’m sure I will find a way to make it all work. 🙂 Maybe sitting down poses? Lol. 🙂

I’d appreciate your prayers for our family as we adjust to this new trial, and that I would be patient and joyful through it.

  1. I think your positive attitude toward a painful and inconvenient situation will make it less of a challenge than it might be. I’ve already said a prayer on your behalf and on that of your family.

  2. Would you be able to photograph and talk about some of the ladies who come to help and/or encourage you, instead of yourself? That way the pressure would be off you for the posing, and you could share some of those lovely ladies with us, while giving yourself a break. (There were a few unintentional puns in those sentences.) Only a thought.

  3. Horrible news! I sprained my ankle the first week of school 2 years ago, and this year I’ve strained my neck. So I can fully appreciate the pain you’re going through! Praying with you and praising God for the help you’ve received and will continue to hopefully receive!

  4. What about Modest Mondays with your girls for a few weeks, how you dress them modestly at different ages and stages 🙂 Praying you heal quickly!

  10. So sorry to hear this! Keeping you in my prayers. I love Modest Mondays, but don’t worry about all of us out here in blogland! You take care of yourself and get back to posting and photos when you can.

  11. I am so sorry to hear about your accident. I have broken a bone in my foot before and I wore an inflatable boot for 3 months. I know it isn’t fun, but it is survivable. As for Modest Mondays, sitting poses are good, kids are good, your sister could pinch hit, or you could let readers submit some pictures and info and you could randomly use reader submissions. I know you will find a way and work it out. Praying for you.

  12. Sorry to read this, praying you heal faster than expected. Love your heart and so happy to hear what your friends and family are doing for you during this time. Blessings

  13. So sorry to read this! I pray that God will bring healing swiftly & that as the weeks go on, He will continue to provide you with the help you will need.
    Blessings,

  14. So sorry to hear this, but can so relate. Friday night I was put on modified bedrest with our 4th pregnancy and will remain this way until the baby comes in 5-6 weeks. It sure can change your plans in a hurry, but I love the way God provides. I see His hand all over this. Will pray for you.

  15. Oh I am so sorry!! You will make it because so many people will be praying for you. You are so blessed to have your mom nearby. You will probably find that you are able to do a little more on crutches as your initial healing and pain passes. Rest and savor the cuddly reading times with your children.

  16. I’m so sorry to hear about your ankle. I sprained mine a few months back and am not used to being immobile. It was a humbling time as I had to ask for help but people were more than gracious. Thinking of you and said a prayer.

  17. Reading that your husband scooped you up in his arms and carried you to the van warmed my heart and brought a tear to my eyes. I too had a bad fall about a month ago and even though I weigh about as much as he does right now, my husband did the same. And I was even on the ground at that point! THAT’S love! I wouldn’t have thought twice if my husband had just helped me hobble to the house, but him carrying me showed me a greater love and sacrifice.

  18. Bless your dear heart! There are hidden treasures in this for you…God promises that! (Romans 8:28) They may be hard to find and difficult to spot, but very well worth digging for! 😉 As you adjust to a slower pace, may the dear Lord bless you, share His thoughts with you, and draw you ever nearer to Him. My dear Mom used to tell me that God is pleased the most when we lean on Him the hardest. Lean in to Him, and enjoy this time in His arms, my friend. Love, Cheryl

  19. Oh no! And how odd that it’s the same bone your husband broke. Wishing you all the best as you deal with this hurdle!

  20. Sorry to hear about your accident. Praying for a quick recovery and grace to deal with it. Have you heard of comfrey? It’s also called the bone knitting herb.

  21. So sorry to hear about your broken foot! Essential oils to the rescue! There are some that are EXCELLENT for bone mending, pain (obviously), swelling, etc. Accepting God’s harder providences is key and thanking Him IN the situation is a command, which I’m sure you and your family have done. RELISH your now “forced” reading times with your children!! The other readers’ comments above are great, such as using your friends or own daughters as models! Keep a journal of all this. It is absolutely amazing what we forget about a certain situation if it is not recorded. (And I am THE WORST journal-keeper and have A LOT of regrets because of this poor habit….). May you heal perfectly and in a timely manner~

  22. I am sorry! I broke my foot when my second baby was 5 months old. When I got home from the doctor, I sat and cried because I realized I couldn’t sweep my floor for 6 weeks. It was hard. It ended up being about 8 weeks of crutches and I realized part way through, I needed full time help and went to stay with my parents. Remember to take the time off of it seriously. I still have issues as I didn’t listen to the instructions….
