How I've Made Over My Mornings and Created A Routine!

I’m not a person who routine comes naturally to. Schedules tend to make me stand in awe of the moms who pull them off. We do best with routines, and even that gets tweaked a lot.

When I first went through the Make Over Your Morning course, It wasn’t a dramatic change. I didn’t end the two week course and have a totally new morning routine.  I  had a new baby when I went through it and it was a hard time to make change come about.


A few weeks ago however, I realized that a lot of things have changed about my morning, thanks to the course. I finally have a routine! Here is what it looks like.

Wake Up, exercise, take a shower, get dressed, eat breakfast, do devotions with the children, and start school.

1. Wake Up – I wake up between 6-8 AM. Right now I don’t try for any earlier than 6 because I’m up several times a night nursing an almost 5 month old. If I’m up super late, I don’t push myself to get up early and sleep in until 8. I’m trying really hard to get enough sleep though, so I can get up at 6-6:30 every day. My goal is to be in bed by 10:00, but that does not always happen.

2. Exercise – I’m doing an 8 week challenge right now, and part of that includes doing 30 minutes of exercise six days a week. I alternate between doing a Walk Away The Pounds DVD, and doing a harder 15 minute workout from Fit Yummy Mummy. When I do the 15 minute workout I normally go across the street in the evening to the elementary school and walk. The children play on the playground and the baby is in the Tula carrier.

I’ve been looking forward to exercising because I get super encouraged while I do it. Really? Yes it’s true! I’ve been listening to homeschooling podcasts from Read Aloud Revival while I exercise, and it gives me a lot to think through from what I’m hearing. I occasionally listen to business podcasts as well ( a favorite of mine is How They Blog). Fresh encouragement as a homeschooling mom has been awesome. A word of advice? Don’t wait for your once a year homeschool conference to be refreshed. Find a podcast to listen to once in awhile as you do chores. I start my day so excited to jump in and homeschool now that I’m listening to these podcasts!

3. Take A Shower – If for some reason I exercise later in the day I skip the shower. If I am all hot and sweaty I take a shower. Most days. 😉 Sometimes as much as I want to get a shower in it’s just not possible. I wash my face in the shower with the L’BRI Deep Pore Cleanser.

4. Get Dressed – This was an area that taking the course really helped in. It made me realize I needed to have a better wardrobe for this crazy busy time with a new baby, and still needing to lose postpartum baby weight.

I was spending a lot of time picking out an outfit in the morning, and most of the outfits needed ironing. Since the baby sleeps in our room and is normally still asleep when I’m picking out an outfit, I don’t like being in my room long.  I was feeling pretty frustrated with it all and wanted to simplify some things. I went to our local Cato store and they had some maxi skirts on clearance, so I bought three of them. They are wrinkle free and I have several shirts they go with. Plus they fit better than a lot of other clothes right now (not happy about that one…but working on it!).

The Make Over Your Mornings course suggests picking out your outfit the night before, but I just haven’t been able to get that in my evening routine. So I appreciate adding some easy outfits.

5. Eat breakfast – This one still needs a lot of work. My poor husband. Does that give you a clue that fixing breakfast is not my strong point? I try to have cold cereal in the house for him, and the children eat a lot of oatmeal, eggs and toast, and yes, cold cereal. I have greek yogurt with fruit and honey mixed in. My goal is to have muffins and waffles made up in the freezer, and just pull them out the night before. I just can’t seem to get that pulled off. I did make a waffle mix and that has been helpful.

6. Have devotions with the children – We do different things for devotions, right now we are reading through a scripture story book, other times we read through Proverb for the day, or use an actual study (like something from Character Concepts) and work through it. I need to work on adding in my own devotion time in the morning, but so far I just use this time for myself as well. Being honest here…I know others have created this amazing morning routine with journals and highlighters and printables for what to pray over your family. One day I hope to be there. I will say I pray in the shower a lot. 🙂

  1. Caroline, thank you for detailing your morning routines. I was wondering, can you offer me a word of encouragement on pushing through those tired parts of the day to enjoy life more and to be present mentally for young children? I have lots of interests and hobbies that I just cannot do because I am so tired all the time. My super productive/awake time is early morning through about 11 am, but after 11 all I can think about is getting a nap for myself (and my 3-year old has stopped napping, so I feel really guilty napping when he is awake because it means he has to just watch tv by himself when I could be spending quality time with him). Then, for bedtime, I lay down with my children (toddlers) to help them go to sleep, and I end up falling asleep myself, and my husband and I rarely see eachother (he works 8-8, 6 days a week). I can’t make myself stay up past 8:30 or 9. I just feel so tired and guilty all the time, and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I see bloggers like you (long-time follower) who seem so productive and I don’t understand what I’m missing. I don’t have health problems, I just had a blood panel done because I’m pregnant and they said I’m not anemic or anything. Sorry to unload 🙂 I just need encouragement in overcoming the sluggishness of motherhood to push through to enjoying life– sounds like an oxymoron, but all this resting means I don’t have time for hobbies I really enjoy, like baking or sewing or crafts, because every waking minute is spent on chores, etc., because I sleep any time I have down time. Thank you Caroline. Much encouragement from your blog is so much appreciated. I hate to ask such a detailed question, but I have been chewing on this for a long time and just need a fresh perspective.

    • Ah I hear you so much in everything you just said. I have 6 children and I’m 24 weeks pregnant with number 7 and the best advice I can give is cling to Jesus and meditate in his word every moment it keeps me going .

    • 2 things right off the bat you can do:

      1. Stop laying down with your toddlers. It’s a bad habit. They will never learn to sleep on their own. Start a new routine, bath, jammies, story, prayer/Bible.

      2. Have your 3 y/o have quiet time in his or her room while you nap. This could take some training.

      • Actually, Danielle, its funny you say those two things, because actually writing out the comment to Caroline jogged my mind and got me thinking about my problem in a new way, and this very day I made my 2 yr old go to sleep by herself, and made my 3 yr old stay in his room for 1 hour. Today I spent most of it making my 2 yr old go back into her room (she kept coming out) but she did eventually fall asleep on her own. So I almost feel like getting my thoughts down on paper (kind of) presented some solutions, the same ones you thought of. Thanks for your kindness. Wondering, do any of the other moms stress out about toddlers watching tv during short intervals, like in the shower, or while I do a short devotional in the afternoon? Would like to hear anyone’s thoughts who is willing to share. Thanks and hugs

        • I’ll second the above thoughts! Having just little ones is a lot of hard work, and sometimes you just have to ask for God’s grace (in the midst of your dishes, laundry, etc.) to get you through the day. And He gives it!

          And, this year when I became pregnant (my 5th) I finally decided to stop lying down with my 4 and 2-year olds to get them to sleep (having the same problem of falling asleep with them and getting my clock off). It still takes many reminders for the 2-year old to stay in bed, but it has been worth it for me to be able to stay up until a “normal” bedtime and get some work or reading done. Same for the quiet time in the afternoon, though the youngest takes a nap.

          I have felt guilty at times about the kids watching tv, but I’ve been encouraged by my husband to let them do it! They get exercise, fresh air, reading time, and mommy time throughout the day, so we’ve set a certain amount of time in the afternoon that my husband and I feel is okay to let them watch (and of course we decide what they watch–a video or PBS, so there aren’t sketchy commercials). That’s usually when I can get a nap in.

        • Im glad you took it the way I meant it. Late yesterday I thought about it and I was like wow, that could came out sunding snarky. I can be a bit blunt. LOL. I meant it will love. :-). Just trying to help you avoid some issues down the road. And you need your proper rest.

          Quiet time, is good for the toddler, and I’m not against tv either. Make it educational too, but that will help with the “guilt” of putting the tv on. I’m a firm believer in allowing children time to themselves. They don’t need mommy around them 24 hrs a day. They are small so obviously don’t leave them in harms way. But they can play on their own, or watch a little tv, it won’t hurt them.

    • It sounds like you have been given some good advice! I would first say you should not feel guilty about trying to get a nap in if your 3 year old is awake! Maybe you could set some toys in their room and train the children to play quietly while you lay down for 30 minutes. I’m not against using an educational video or Starfall on the iPad or computer while I rest as well.

      I did not blog or own a business when my first two children were little. That’s when I was the most exhausted, and I had adrenal fatigue. You might look that up, it won’t show up on normal blood tests.

      As for doing hobbies, I’ve had times where I pick one day that I’m going to work on a hobby project, or some mom’s just commit to spending 30 minutes a day on a project.

  2. Thank you for your transparency. You helped me to realize that I can still have a good day even if I don’t get in a devotion. Also, I don’t have to be perfect in my walk with the Lord.     • My goal is to read my scriptures before bed at night, sometimes I do it on my phone while nursing. Every day looks different.

  3. And I will add, please don’t use me as a role model in the area of personal devotions! There are so many other bloggers who have amazing tips on getting in personal quiet time. I’m not trying to say that my lack of quiet time is ok, just being honest that I’m not getting it in like I want. I’m thankful for the time I have with my children were we read God’s word together.

I am probably not at all your typical reader; I only have one child (not by choice), I don’t solely wear skirts or dresses, I don’t homeschool, and I work outside the home! BUT I really enjoy reading your blog! You are a refreshing voice in the blogging world, because you stick to your convictions without sounding preachy and pious. You don’t load your posts with condemning statements (about working outside the home, wearing pants, public school, etc.), add a disclaimer that you’re only talking to certain groups of people, and then get upset when people with other thoughts, opinions, or experiences write a comment! I appreciate your candor and your ability to give advice without seeming like you have everything in life all figured out. From reading your blog posts, I would say that God has blessed you with insight, discernment, and maturity. If I lived closer to you, I think it would be a pleasure to have you and your lovely family over for lots of good conversation, because despite our differences, we seem to have many important things in common.
