Our Keystone Bullet Trailer Tour!

I’m finally back from maternity leave now that I’m starting my second trimester and feeling a little better, and thought the perfect first post was to share about our new (to us) Keystone Bullet trailer that we moved into a few weeks ago!

If you haven’t followed our adventure, we just sold our 5000 square foot house that we had remodeled and moved our family of 9 (with the 8th baby on the way in December) into a 36″ travel trailer. We moved it next to my mother in law’s house in the country, and plan on living there and traveling as often as we can, while saving money to hopefully buy a house in the country.

Our plans for how long we do it is up in the air right now. We have talked about doing it until November, and finding somewhere to live before the baby is born, but we might just rent an airbnb for 4-6 weeks after the baby is born and then move back into the trailer and do this for a year.

It’s a crazy, once in a life time adventure that we don’t see ourselves doing long term, we definitely want to buy a house again. I keep telling myself the Dave Ramsey quote, “you have to live like nobody else so you can live like nobody else.” That keeps me focused during the hard moments.

I wanted to share pictures of the trailer, but we haven’t gotten it completely decorated and set up exactly like I want. The pictures I’m sharing below are from the listing when we bought it, but they are very close to how it looks now.

As you walk into the trailer this is what you see. I wanted this model of trailer for the slide in the kitchen, which gave us the island. It does take away from floor space for the children to play, but trying to cook for this many in such a small space makes it worth it.

The white bins under the couch didn’t come with the trailer, so we went to IKEA and bought long wire baskets that hold even more. I keep books and shoes under the couch.

As for sleeping arrangements, the futon folds down into a bed so our 10 and 5 year old girls sleep there together.

Here is a better look at the kitchen area. The fridge and freezer work well, even though they are small. I have to get creative on how I store food, but we have an extra refrigerator and freezer in my MIL’s garage so that helps.

The oven does not work well at all. I had heard that trailer ovens tended not to work well, so we just bought a really nice convention toaster oven that can fit 2 pizzas in it, or roast a chicken in it! I have it on the counter, which means I lose my counter space there but it’s worth it to have an oven!

I keep a diffuser on the counter as well, and I have two oil racks in the master bedroom where I keep all my essential oils. We use them daily! You can see my favorite products I use here.

This is the only photo that includes the master bedroom at all. I’ll include more pictures later, but as you can see it’s pretty small. There are two black doors that slide shut, to give us some sort of privacy.

The bedroom is where I struggle feeling claustrophobic the most, especially with the doors shut. I was feeling pretty overwhelmed on Sunday morning getting ready for church with everyone, but I grabbed some Stress Away essential oil and put on and that helped a lot!

Here you have the children’s bunk room. The boys sleep on these two bunks, and overall they haven’t complained much at all. The room does have quite a bit more in it than these pictures. We have two cellos and two violins stored in the room, plus the pack and play is up at times for Emily to sleep in.

This side of the room is the girl’s side. Carrianna (12) sleeps on the top bunk, and Deborah (8) sleeps on the futon. Everyone has a bed to sleep on, and only two of the girls are sharing a bed so I think that’s pretty awesome for a trailer!

This is what the trailer looks like from the outside! I know it’s silly, but we were happy to find a model that wasn’t crazy looking on the outside. For a trailer, this is a more of a classic look.

So…I know you all probably have a few questions! Feel free to ask below, but I’ll answer some here.

Are you still glad you are doing this, now that you are actually living in the trailer?

Yes I am, but it has it’s moments where I think we have totally lost our minds. The financial freedom is amazing, but you trade that for lack of privacy in many different ways. You have to be very focused and committed on why you are doing this for it to work. It also really helps if your children love it, and our children so far are very glad we have done this.

What about work?

Sean and I both work online, and all we need is a computer. He is getting ready to sell his iMac and purchase a MacBook Pro so he can be more portable for working on the road. He has an office set up in his mom’s house, and we store all our Well Ordered Parent inventory there. All I need is a laptop, so in a way I feel like I’ll have more time to work since I won’t have a huge house to keep up with.

How are you cooking in the trailer?

I’ve mainly been using my Instant Pot and the stovetop. We just got the new convection oven in and I haven’t had a chance to use it yet. I’ve made scrambled eggs in the Instant Pot, cooked hamburger there, made rice and meatballs, the options are endless!

What is your favorite thing about this lifestyle?

While family togetherness on one hand is harder (the children are constantly outside or at my mother in law’s house during the day!), overall I see us growing much closer as family through this adventure. We have had some really sweet moments already, times where we are connecting with our children on a totally new level and it’s pretty special.

We are brand new to traveling (on our first trip as I write this!), but I can already tell I’ll love the traveling aspect of it. It was so incredible to just pull our house along, park it and go back to find everything we need waiting for us! I will love the adventures we have, and we have some historical trips planned for the fall to line up with homeschooling studies!

Is it easier to keep clean than your large house?

Yes! If we all pitch in, in 20-30 minutes max we have a sparkling clean trailer. Since it is so small you do have to constantly be putting things away, keeping up on dishes, etc. to keep it clean. It’s a habit that I’m hoping I’ll become really good at, and continue it when we purchase another house.
