DIY: Make Your Own Liquid Hand Soap Tutorial!
When it comes to cleaning products, I don’t take the time to do a lot of DIY projects. I try to find natural cleaning products on sale, and stock up when I can. But when I saw different tutorials online to make this liquid hand soap, out of a bar of Mrs. Meyer’s soap I knew I wanted to try it!
I love using Mrs. Meyer’s soap, the smell is amazing and it’s all natural. But at $5.00 a bottle, it is a splurge. I tried making my own liquid hand soap, and made a gallon of liquid soap for about $5.00 on supplies! That gallon of liquid soap is worth $50.00 of Mrs. Meyer’s hand soap. I find the savings to be worth my time in making this!
All you need is one bar of Mrs. Meyer’s bar soap, some liquid glycerin, and a gallon of water! Some sort of hand grater is needed as well. I used the Lemon Verbena scent.
Open up a bar of Mrs. Meyer’s bar soap in your favorite scent, and admire how pretty it is. 🙂 It’s your last look at this lovely bar of soap!
Grab a hand grater, and start grating that lovely bar of soap into tiny shreds.
Once you have the whole bar of soap grated up, stop and enjoy the smell for a minute. 🙂
Pour your grated bar of soap into a gallon of water. Add 2 TBS of liquid glycerin as well.
Stir your soap and liquid glycerin together over medium to high heat. Stir occasionally as you wait for the soap to melt.
The soap is all melted! Now just turn off the heat, and let it sit on the stove for 10-12 hours, or overnight. I let mine sit overnight and preferred that. You are waiting for this soap to thicken up as it sits.
After sitting overnight, the soap is nice and thick!
After the soap has sat overnight, mix it up using a hand blender. This helps breaks up the thickness and blend it together well, before you put it into a container.
Pour it into a gallon container, label it, and you are all done! It really doesn’t take very long to make this, and the cost is a huge savings!
I haven’t tried making this with any other brand of bar soap, so I can only recommend using Mrs. Meyer’s bar soap for this recipe to work.

You can extend the savings even further by diluting your liquid soap and putting it in a foaming hand soap dispenser (I have one that I got at Dollar Tree over 3 years ago!!! – I just keep refilling it with my own mix)!
This is great! I have been on a mission to purge our home of unsafe/unnatural products (shampoo, lotion, etc) and just as I thought I covered everything I looked at the ingredient list on my liquid hand soap by the kitchen sink…uuuugh parabens!! Long time lurker, first time commenter. I cheat with handsoap: I put some diluted Dr. Bronner’s in a soap dispenser. It makes my hands feel lovely in the winter.
I have to say, though, I make two of my own cleaners (window cleaner and degreaser) and it could NOT be easier or cheaper. Honestly, I think my vinegar/water window cleaner works better than Windex, and I love the way my lavender cleaner smells. I’ve tried other home-made cleaning products (furniture polish, and a bathtub cleaner) and I didn’t like the way they worked. So I buy those at the store. Of course, you gotta do what works best for you, and I don’t know what that is, but you could have your kids do it as a chemistry project.
I do this quite often when needed. In fact, I think other soaps work as I have used bars of soap that were natural soap from hotels we got over the years. Now that stash is gone, but it worked. Our recipe didn’t have glycerin in it, just the soap bar and water. I think I got the idea from heavenlyhomemakers.com several years ago. And you can stretch it to by putting it in one of those foaming pumps.
Please don’t use milk jugs to store liquids. They are bio-degradable and WILL leak! Don’t ask me how I know this! 😉

So does the glycerin keep the liquid soap from turning gloppy? I’ve done this before, but without glycerin, and the texture turned disgusting and it was unusable.
I’m guessing that is what it is for. I haven’t let mine sit for months yet. 😉
Tried it today and it turned out great! Curious about some other comments — If you can’t store the soap in a milk jug, what do you keep it in? Just wondering…

Nadia, you could store it in a 5 gallon bucket or similar type of bucket or a large glass Mason jar (we use half gallon size, you can find them at Walmart)–at least that has worked for us! 🙂 Thanks for this recipe, Caroline, I will have to try the lemon verbena scent. I have often used Dr. Bronner’s peppermint and love it!

I made this and love the way it turned out. However, -after a few weeks, the mixture has separated. Any way to prevent this?
