Large Family Logistics Review and Giveaway


Sometimes God sends you something that you didn’t even know how badly you need it. That’s what happened when I was sent the “Large Family Logistics: The Art and Science of Managing the Large Family” by Kim Brenneman.

I would take a guess that I am not alone in my chaos of running a household with four children under seven. It is hard work. It is harder than I ever imagined going into Motherhood. The rewards are so worth it, and I feel incredibly blessed by my four children.

But things have barely been staying together in my household.

I was 11 when my Mom was diagnosed with Lupus. She was extremely sick off and on for years after that-only going in remission for a few years. Her energies were focused on homeschooling my sister, brother and I. Teaching me homemaking skills just was not possible for her. Once I was married and had my own home she began to see how much I struggled with tending my own home, and felt so bad. Organizing and homemaking skills comes very easily for my Mom and sister. To me-it is like a big jigsaw puzzle that is missing the picture on the box that shows you what it is supposed to look like.
The Large Family Logistics book is the picture of the jigsaw for me. I wanted to sit and have a good cry just a few minutes after browsing through this book. Several other well known homemaking books sit on my shelf, but they have been to in depth and overwhelming for me to even plunge in and start their methods. This is not the case with The Large Family Logistics book. Kim has a way of lovingly encouraging you each step of the way while clearly laying out for you what step to take! With 47 chapters, she has not missed one area in your home that needs attention-in fact she has covered several topics that I wouldn’t even think of!
Kim originally started writing this book for her daughters after she struggled keeping her own home running smoothly after marriage. After 9 children she seems to have figured out a fabulous system for keeping her household running well.

  38. Your review almost made me cry…. I am so there. Just last night I told my husband that I wanted to be more organized, that I wanted to… and…. and…. But I just DON'T KNOW HOW. I have 5 kids 6 and under. I love them all, and very happy with my life. But I don't know how to manage it all. This book sounds like it will really help me find some solutions and encouragement!

They are still little now but I am already teaching them a little bit. When they are older I'd like to take them to nursing homes a couple of times a month… We could be our own family band! Right now I'm learning to play the accordion, but it's just not as graceful and lovely as a harp! =)

    And oh my goodness… my girls are all under 9 (4 of them), but I feel so much like you describe! My mom was handicapped with MS, and NEVER taught me anything about homemaking (not that she knew, anyways). Thank God for my stepmother, who taught me much, but my teen years were 'too late' for it to become part of my DNA, I guess! I may just order this book anyway!

  196. I'd love to have this book! I don't know how to be a good housekeeper either and it drives me crazy. My problem is a combination of 1- never having learned how to do it 2- perfectionism (which leads to) 3- feeling overwhelmed constantly.

    I'd also love the book "Preserving" by Carol Wilson… Something else I never learned how to do!

  205. I've been reading Kim's blog for a long, long time. I remember her mentioning putting her work into a book, so was really pleased to see it published this year. Would LOVE to have a hard copy in my own hands!

    I didn't even have to go to VF.com, I have a list sitting in front of me, courtesy of my 10yo son who's been studying the catalog =)

    We especially like the Gospel Story Classics books ~ we have several, but I'd choose The Bible in the Wall.

I mentioned that if I'm going to dream, I might as well dream big! I play the flute and I would love for my daughter and I to be able to play flute/harp duets together! Someday, someday… =)

    I ordered this book and love it as well! It is helpful and practical; I just wish some of the chapters were a bit longer!! 🙂

  378. As a young mother of 4 children, this book sits on my night table along with my Bible. Other books come and go but these ones are the books that I can read over and over again. I even read it while in labour with our youngest!!
