How I Teach Handwriting

I’m pretty relaxed with my little ones. Preschool is hit or miss at our house. In other words, it’s the last thing on my school list to get to. 🙂 My 4 year old already knows her ABC’s and her numbers, thanks to the Preschool Prep videos we let them watch. I do have preschool books, we are using Horizon’s preschool books right now, but it’s just not something I stress about.

I start teaching handwriting in Kindergarten. I’ve used various things, but my favorite resource teaching Carrianna has been to use the 1777 New England Primer Manuscript Printable Alphabet Set.  It comes complete with the same 26 Scripture passages, biblical ditties from the 1777 Primer used by the Puritans, and plenty of dotted lines for practice.

I have it printed off and put in page protecter sheets in a notebook. My daughter knows she can pull this out and use it anytime, and sometimes I find her doing it without me even telling her to.

It’s been a very simple, easy way to have her work on her letters, without needing to keep buying handwriting books over and over again to practice the same letters.

With my older boys we do use handwriting books, but we also add copy work practice in at times.

I’ve used printable resources like Write Through The Bible or How to Manage Your Mouth for Kids.
