Quarter Mile Math Review & Giveaway!
Last year math was the dreaded subject in our school. I spent many days frustrated and in tears trying to teach math to our oldest son. I started spending time in prayer over his schoolwork, as I knew we couldn’t keep going in the same course we were on. Thankfully I found a different program that is working beautifully for our family – Teaching Textbooks! We also have found a math drill program that is fantastic to use!
Quarter Mile Math is a computer game that drills math facts. This game is good for grades K-9, so a child can get a lot of use out it! The student can choose to race either a car or a horse, and depending on how fast he answers the questions he can win the race. The student races against his current best time, not against the other racer’s times.
You can see a complete list of the math facts that are covered here, but suffice it to say there are plenty! Kindergarten level starts out learning numbers and letters. Then you go on to easy addition and subtraction problems, and work your way up to multiplication, fractions, Decimals, Estimation, and more.
What I like about Quarter Mile Math is that while it is a game, it is not flashy enough to cause any distraction in trying to answer the math problems. The game does not give the appearance that you are playing a video game, which I personally like. 🙂
My boys (almost 9 and 7) have loved playing this game. I actually have to pull them away from it, which is saying a lot for my child who is not a lover of math problems!

I am super excited about this math program. My daughter is 11 years old and while she does well in math, she is still skip counting her math facts. I am hoping to use this program to help her memorize the math facts in several areas so she KNOWS them!
I like the idea of strengthening the mental math through fun games. I also really like the idea of them not being “video gamey” as those are not allowed in our family. Would LOVE to try this with my 2nd and 4th graders! 🙂
I love math! Anything to get young people excited about math is a winner in my book.
I, too, love math! I wished I had a tool like this while teaching my children. Most of them really liked learning with games on the computer. Great idea and program.
What interests me the most is that it is self-competative, not competative agains others or the computer.
I love that it’s a GAME! Yet kiddos love and learn from it!
I like the idea of faily tournaments! A little friendly competition is always good for my boys!

Oops. Just saw I was supposed to go to Quarter mile’s website. So I’ve done that now. I like that the program can be used for so many levels of kids. That makes it versatile and cost effective.

I am in the same boat as you were last year. My nine year old son is just not getting math and it is frustrating. I like the idea that this appeals to different learning abilities–auditory, visual, ect. Sounds like a great program!
I’m just starting my process with homeschooling and i believe this would be a great blessing to my son’s,especially that math is an area that is mostly the struggle in.
I like the idea that is covers so many grades. (K – 9th grade). A large family would do well with it – “everyone” can “play” – but not be in competition. A new fun way to reenforce math.
I love that this starts so basic with letters and numbers! I wouldn’t have to wait very long to get started! 🙂
I agree with the other comments, anything that is fun for my children to help them learn and memorize math facts, I am all for!! I do like the fact though that it is not too flashy.

Just downloaded the Demo and tested it on my girls. They of course prefer the horses, but they did phenomenally and really enjoyed it! They are 6 and 4. Will definately add to my list of curriculum things to purchase.
I like that they try to beat themselves.
I think what interests me most is the age range. I can use this for a long time, and it will advance with my children, it seems.
I really liked the idea that the student competes against his/her previous times. I was very interested in the download versions that I could pay for at a monthly level. BUT I did not like that it is not available for my Mac. The Mac version that is available only runs on Macs that are fairly old (as far as computers go). Would love to see an upgrade for the Mac.
I completely agree! We just bought the pc you see in the picture from a friend for our boys to use for school because we kept running into the problem of programs not working on our Mac computers.

Just beginning to get my “toes wet” with homeschooling supplies… this sounds very profitable for many reasons. Think I’d go with all three levels.

My son really enjoyed developing his math in this way; the competition and speed are part of his basic makeup. My daughter on the other hand just gets more frustrated when she can’t keep up with the speed of others, and I’ve not found a great software program to help her memorize that doesn’t depend on speed. Are you / Is anyone familiar with something that would help with accuracy without the stress of competition?

This program looks awesome! I like the fact that it’s not a timed math dril. It’s much better that the kids go at there own pace & time dosen’t expire. Another thing I liked was the fact that you can track the progress your child is making & print it out for your records.

I like the way it adjusts to the individual personal learning needs. Also I like that it encompasses so many learning stages! I would love to have a good look as maths is my favourite subject to teach, but I haven’t found a great maths curriculum yet ( to say I’m picky would be an understatement). I am looking for something that will fill in the gaps with a child who breezes over work without fully comprehending the processes & although they can pass that lesson fine, they don’t retain the knowledge for future use.
I love that it is designed for such a broad age range and that it is a game, but not a video game as you said. My daughter is only just turning 4, but I am glad to get reviews from others to plan for the future. Thank you for sharing your experiences!
My daughter is still quite young and is our first of hopefully many, and I love that I can use this with her for many more years and any other babies that we are blessed with. I am also blessed to babysit quite often and would enjoy having a “go-to” game on hand for my rowdy ones that is also educational.
