I’ve been thinking a lot about wardrobes, modest outfits and the winter months. Some women love the winter months because they can bundle up and not worry nearly so much about modesty. Others feel claustrophobic, frumpy, and ill kept.
Normally I love winter clothes but this year it’s not been so great. Since I never could lose all the baby weight after Sophia, not all of my winter clothes fit. Now that I’m three months pregnant I’m definitely in that stage of feeling larger without looking pregnant, and it’s been a challenge.
After looking at lots of outfits online and thinking through what winter outfits look the best, here are some tips to look put together for a lovely winter look.
Shorter Skirts With Leggings
I love wearing maxi length dresses and skirts. It’s most of what I wear. But the skirts I have that are knee length or just below knee length can be layered with leggings underneath and I feel more put together. I’m not sure what it is about the combo, but it does seem to have a little more modern look to it. You can stay modest with the leggings underneath and still easily get on the floor to play with your children.
As for leggings, I wear the fleece lined leggings from Deborah & Co. I also just got a pack of regular black leggings that I found at Costco (you can find them on Amazon here) and absolutely love them for a little bit lighter feel. Silky smooth and they cover the tummy area which is great. 🙂
The same principle goes for dresses as well. They have adorable dresses out that are knee length or a little longer which can be layered with leggings and boots.
I know I’m not wearing leggings in these pictures, but you get the idea!
Shapewear, Shapewear, Shapewear….
There is no shame in this. Really. If you have had several babies and your tummy is just not the same, I don’t know what’s wrong in wearing some exercise shorts or shape wear type shorts to help hold things in. I just would be careful about wearing the corset type kind, because of Diastasis Recti. They also have splints you can wear if you are working on your Diastasis, but I don’t find them to be as slimming as just wearing some shape wear. You can get a pair of good shapewear for under skirts and dresses on Amazon.
Your Winter Coat Can Be Important
I found my blue wool winter coat from ThredUP for a good deal. It’s warm and I do like it, but I feel claustrophobic in it. Looking back I wish I would have gone for a puffer coat or something even more fitted. Coats can be expensive but you can find good deals on them towards spring when they are on clearance. If you want to feel put together whenever you are out and about, don’t wear a coat that is two sizes too large. You also want to make sure the color compliments you, since it will be up right next to your face all the time.
Hair Styles Matter!
The other day I did double french braids (like this hairstyle except I left them hanging down) and you wouldn’t believe how different I felt all day! Taking 5 minutes to fix your hair can definitely help chase away that frumpy feeling. It also helps control the winter frizz if you pull it back in a Flexi Clip or braid it.
This is an easy hairstyle that pulls up half of your hair, using a Flexi Clip. My daughter and I have thicker hair so we use a size medium, but a lot of people would use a small or even an x-small if they have thinner hair. Gather some hair back like you are going to pull it up into a barrette, then just twist it and turn it over. Put the pin the of Flexi Clip against your scalp, slide it through and slide it in place to the clip! Super easy and it stays all day!
*During the month of February you can spend $40 at Lilla Rose and receive 1 free bobby pin, or spend $50 and receive 2 free bobby pins! These are super duper strong bobby pins, not like the ones you get at Walmart!*
Decide On Your Style…
My style has changed over the years. It’s changed in the 7 years that I’ve been blogging and it’s definitely changed from when I was a teenager. My thoughts and feelings on modesty have changed, partially because of being married and wanting to respect my husband’s opinions as well as my own. You need to decide what look you are going for. Do you want a more modern look? Do you prefer maxi skirts all the time? Are you in love with dresses, or do you like jeans and tunic shirts?
Pick your style and go with it, staying consistent over the winter months. Take into account your body shape and what does look best on you. If you are content with the style you have chosen, it will help you be more content during the winter months.
Here are some ideas I found on Amazon (if you have Prime it’s easy to order and send them back if you don’t like the fit!).
Women’s Floral Print Casual Dress – Try leggings and boots under this.
Women’s Long Sleeve Pleated Dress – You can see how cute this is with boots (I would add leggings) and a long necklace!
Women’s solid Flare Midi Skirt – affordable and any color to choose from that you would want!
All of our dresses at Deborah & Co. are 20% off this week, and this dress even has free shipping!
While it might feel that winter is dragging on, we all know that spring eventually comes! Try to slowly change the areas in your winter wardrobe that you really don’t like, looking out for sales as the clearance items start!
It’s worth it to put an effort into your wardrobe. You can go from frumpy to fabulous!!
