A Fall Tradition That is Fun and Educational {Plus a Giveaway!}
Fall is such a strange time of year. One day we bring school books outside and read on a quilt under the trees. The next day we are bundled up in sweaters and longing for hot chocolate!
During the fall and winter months we play more board games as a family, since we are inside more. A simple, easy game that most of our children can manage to play is Uno. We are slowly working on adding more games to our collection.
It was a rainy day when we received a fun package in the mail from Simply Fun. I receive so many business packages in the mail for Deborah & Co. that the children were elated that finally a package had come for them!
Simply Fun is a company that offers toys for children of all ages, that are not only fun, but they are also educational. I had never heard of this company until an online friend contacted me and asked if she could send me a game to try. I’m always on the lookout for new educational items, so I was excited to browse through the website and pick out a game.
After the package was opened….
They were very happy to discover that it was a new game to play!
Sumology is a math game where the children build equations, and have the opportunity to do addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems. The suggested age is 8 and up, but we made it work for our 5 year old to play with us. I helped her find easy addition problems that she could handle and it worked fine for her.

I’m sure most of us homeschooling families have tried educational games. Some are a success; others are put on the shelf and never touched again. Sumology was a huge success in our family! Our oldest struggles in math, but he was excited to try it out, and ended up winning the whole game! Now he keeps asking when we are going to play it again, and is looking forward to the moment when his dad gets a break from college homework to play the game with him! I almost cried when I realized he liked the game, and better yet, grasped all the concepts well enough to win it!
Simply Fun has educational games available for toddlers through the teen years. They have them broken down into games for toddlers, preschool, early elementary, upper elementary, and teen/family games. It makes it easier when trying to select which age group you need.
They have a variety of different math games, as well as geography, reading, telling time, science, and many more on different subjects!
These games would make excellent Christmas gifts, and are perfect for the grandparent that wants to buy them a toy when you have requested that it be educational!

First I’ve never heard of this company before so I’m glad they sent you a game to review. I couldn’t decide on a game because they’ve got so many that I’ve not seen before – it really would take me awhile to decide. This sumology game though that you are giving away would make a great addition to our collection of games. We do not have anything like that. Rolling bones would also be a good addition to our game collection.
To be honest, the prices seem a bit high. It would be great to hear from others that feel their games are worth the prices. I was just a bit surprised. When you have to be careful where your $$ is spent – $40 for a board game sounds quite expensive. Any thoughts on that?
Hello Nancy, Yes, the games do feel a little pricey. That was also my first reaction. But when I started selling them and received a handful of the games, I was very impressed. The games are very high quality. Sumology, for example, has pieces made of wood, as well as the box.
We have all had games that we pick up cheap, and eventually the pieces start breaking and the box falls apart. Not so with Simply Fun! These are the kind of games that your children will use over and over, and then your grandchildren after them! My conclusion is that the quality is worth the investment.

I would love to try the Sumology game since my older kiddos need more fun ways to practice math! There are lots of others that look fun too though.
Actually, Sumology looks like it would be a great fit for us. And I have one who really needs to work on basic math facts. This would be a fun way to practice.
I think my boys would like Kilter
Kilter is my personal favorite, so far! I love that the concept is simple enough that a 4 year old can play and have fun, but the strategy options are complex enough that adults love it and are challenged as well.
This would be great for Christmas.

I so want the sum-o-l-ogy gain me. I have son who struggles with paper and pencil acitvities who is extremely kinesthetic the way he learns. He is all about touch it build it. He and his sister could play the game to practice their facts and he would love it,

I noticed that they mention “National Common Core State Standards Initiative” for Math and English Language Arts. I didn’t think we were under “common core” for educational standards. Just wondering.

Wow, they carry so many neat games. Several look good, especially for Christmas gifts. The Bank It! game looks fun and exciting.
My 2 oldest (almost 9 and 10) are rushing around to get kitchen after supper chores done as fast as they can, so that they can play Bank-It before bed. It IS a great game. It teaches some great life skills, and it is not luck based. It leaves a lot of decisions up to the player, so they have to learn when to save and when to spend and how to make wise choices. I love how much it teaches, yet it feels like pure play to them!

I love that different ages can play together since mine range from 19-4.
