Are You a Real Woman?

In today’s society, a feminine woman is not exactly valued. However, a woman who is making her own way in the big wide world, climbing the corporate ladder, whisking through the social scene, knocking out glass ceilings – this is the woman that’s held in high esteem.
While Proverbs 31 mentions a woman who is a business woman (“She considereth a field and buyeth it…”) the majority of Proverbs 31 is talking about what kind of a wife, mother and homemaker she is. I sat and tried to explain this chapter, verse by verse, to my six year old daughter last week. She was amazed about how hard working the Proverbs 31 woman was, and asked in all seriousness if she was a princess.
Sometimes it seems like the Proverbs 31 woman is a dream. Who really accomplishes everything that is written about in that chapter?
The quote above from Elisabeth Elliot gives us a good insight into what we should be striving for as a godly woman. We are to be gentle. That means we shouldn’t yell at our children all day long. You may think that’s quite a challenge, but it can be done!
A godly woman is gracious. That means she is courteous, kind, and pleasant. Again, some days make this feel impossible, but it can be done!
A godly woman is giving. She extends herself to others, but she is always mindful of the needs of her family. Nowhere does it indicate that the Proverbs 31 woman extended herself to others at the expense of her family. She knew how to balance the needs of her family with the needs of others.
While the Proverbs 31 woman may at times seem like an unattainable dream, I believe God placed those verses in his scriptures to call us to vision of godly womanhood for the benefit of others. If we continue faithful in our efforts to live up to her beautiful example, we too will find our families rising up and calling us blessed.

Tell your daughter that The Proverbs 31 Woman IS a Princess. It says very clearly in Proverbs 31:1 that this was the advice the KING’s Mother gave to him (for seeking a wife)- A king’s wife IS either a Princess or a Queen : )
I used to feel the Proverbs 31 woman was an unattainable ideal until I noticed something I overlooked in other readings: SHE HAD SERVENTS. Lots, apparently! I’d be knocking all kinds of work out of the park if I had some help around the house!
hmm…I agree we should not be ill intentioned or have arguments for the sake of arguments as you stated in your previous post. Yet, I don’t see anything wrong with having strong opinions and affirming them. And I’ve often seen you defend your strong opinions on this blog too 🙂 I appreciated when you stood up on the issue of Vision Forum.
I believe the verse from Proverbs 29:11 was quoted out of context because the chapter in Proverbs refers to foolish disputes and quarrels, not actual discussions on important/truth issues. Whenever the apostles spoke about defending the truth, doctrine, or matters of Christian living, they use words such as “exhort & rebuke with all authority”, “admonish” and “refute”. Even the apostle Paul publicly rebuked Peter when he was wrong. And the disciples had no filter either when they were questioned by the leaders of the land 🙂 Remember Stephen lashed out at them saying:
“You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears!” (Acts 7:51). These are all very cutting and direct indeed.
So I feel that when you label those who have “strong opinions” as “foolish” because they express them in a bold and direct manner online, you are devaluing apologetics ministries like: apprising.org, letusreason.org, solasisters.com, youroriginsmatter.com, and many others who hold debates on blogs, websites, forums, comments etc. And they do it not because they think they will change someone’s mind, but because they value the truth. So wouldn’t you agree that Christ calls us to be bold, precise and direct when we stand up for the right Biblical issues?
