We have tried several different arrangements for our schoolroom. I think almost every homeschooler has probably done that. 🙂 We tried doing school upstairs at the table and downstairs in the basement, and just when I was pretty discouraged about it all, we found the perfect solution!
I found school desks on Craigslist for $2.50 each, and the chairs were only $1.00 each! I was excited that they were so cheap, but was wondering if this was another passing fancy and they wouldn’t really work.
Because homeschool moms never buy anything thinking it will save all their dilemmas, only to come crashing down when they realize it doesn’t work. Nope. Never had that happen! 😉
It was the best decision ever. We faithfully use these school desks every single day, and what is more wonderful, a lot of their school books fit under the desks, saving precious shelf room on the bookcase.
We stair stepped the desks, going from youngest to oldest. I help my youngest the most at her desk, so I have plenty of space where we put it, instead of positioning her in the corner.
The dining room table is right behind the school desks, and a small bookshelf as well. We also do school at the table, for example we worked on our Christian Kids Explore Earth and Space today, coloring pictures of the earth while at the table together. Textbooks such as math, grammar, etc. are done at the school desks. We do our read alouds on the couch.
Our house is around 1000 sq feet (including the basement where we store business inventory and ship) so we have to make wise decisions when it comes to space. I’m thankful that the desks have not just added to the clutter in our house, rather they have reduced the clutter of more school books laying around, and the children have a dedicated spot to do school work.
That is what works for us! I love how every family comes up with something different.
Love your desks! We also have similar desks – 2 for my younger two and we have 2 larger desks for my oldest two. We moved in to a small home (1200 sq ft) that was big enough for me and my husband back in 2006, to be closer to the church he pastors and to save money. Then in 2008, we adopted 3 brothers (we since have adopted a 4th brother). We decided to add on and doubled the size of our house. Our plans included a large “homeschool room” that is 21 ft x 12 ft. We find this works best for our family. I have my own desk in there too and I had cabinets moved from another part of the house to this room where we can store all of our supplies. I love being organized and keeping all their school books and papers contained in one area. We do school in other areas of the house sometimes, but its nice to have a set place for everything to “live”. 🙂

We school where ever we land… kitchen table, couch, bedroom, outside on the picnic table, on the floor, in the family room, at the library. Sitting with desks against the wall wouldn’t work well with us. I have two in high school, one in Jr. High, one in 4th and one Kindergartener. The older three work pretty much on their own. We start school this coming Monday.
