Character Devotions for Children {Giveaway}
My goal is to have devotions with the children every morning before we start school. During the school months it is easier to put this in the schedule. We slacked some during the summer months of sleeping in later.
I remember devotion time with my brother, sister and mother in the mornings. I shake my head and grimace a little because I recall my brother and I giving my mom a hard time. Lots of giggling and being distracted. But I also remember the good times, of studying the Word and singing hymns. I remember always being amazed over the faith of my mother, and my prayer is that my children will see that faith in me as well. When our devotion time ends up being a disaster, with children who are full of giggles and will not sit still, I take comfort in the fact that I was once that way, and I’m not the only mother who has had struggles keeping this time focused and sacred.
My mother was the main one responsible for devotion time in our home and implanting in us the word of God. Thankfully I have my husband who is extremely active in wanting to teach them as well, so I tend to focus on character time in devotions a lot and he focuses on teaching them the actual stories. That is not a hard fast rule by any means, but it works for us.
Lately we have been using the Character Concepts curriculum. The Kids of Character Curriculum has been such a blessing to us. It is easy to use (a must for this mama) and the children all really enjoy it. I think their favorite part are the questions at the end, asking them what they should do in different scenarios.
This curriculum does not provide you with all the answers.Rather, it teaches you about 45 character qualities you should possess and gives you the scripture reference to read about those qualities and answer the questions it asks.
There is space in the book to write in the answers, but we do this out loud together as a family. This particular set is for ages 7-10, but all the children sit together and listen. I’ve been amazed over how well the children remember the scripture verses that accompany each lesson. We use the flash cards that are included to learn the verse and for review each day as well. I love hearing them recite scripture verses!
The Portraits of Integrity book that comes with the set is superb for boys! It includes stories from history, and many of them include war time men that will grab your boys attention and keep them begging for more! (I’m sure girls would enjoy these as well. My two oldest just happen to be boys who greatly enjoy this book!) There are 45 stories to go along with the 45 good character qualities you are learning about.
Character Concepts has different programs for ages 4 through high school, so if you have a child older or younger then this there is something for them as well! Our family has been so blessed using Proverbs People and now Kids for Character. I highly, highly recommend the Character Concepts company!
